Are Toxic Ingredients Hiding In Your Lipsticks?

What goes into your lipstick matters.

Your lips have delicately thin skin that absorbs ingredients from your lipsticks. Trace amounts of lip color also get ingested whenever you lick your lips or consume food and beverages, which is why you should steer clear of the following toxic chemicals and compounds that can be detrimental to your health.

Lead

Lead is a neurotoxin that accumulates in your body over time and can have an adverse impact especially on pregnant women. While lead is not a required component of a lipstick, it can be found in lip products due to contaminants making their way into other lipstick ingredients.

Aluminum

A common thickening agent used by many non-organic beauty brands, Aluminum is a toxic heavy metal that builds up in your body and it is hard to flush out. It increases your risk of cancer and it is a known immune disruptor. Other harmful heavy metals with similar health risks found in some lipsticks include Chromium and Cadmium.

Paraben

Paraben is a synthetic preservative added to prevent the growth of harmful bacteria and mold in your lipsticks. However, unlike organic preservatives, Paraben is an endocrine disruptor which can interfere with your hormones and it is a known allergen for some people. To enjoy a peace of mind, choose lipsticks formulated with natural preservatives such as Honey or Clay instead of Paraben.

Phthalate

Phthalates allow cosmetics to stick to your skin as in the case of lipstick. However, it is an endocrine disruptor, potential carcinogen and can cause damage to your kidneys, liver or lungs in the long-run.

Petroleum & Mineral Oil

Synthetic dyes derived from Petroleum are stored in your organs and fatty tissues. Petroleum is classified as a carcinogen and therefore will increase your risk of cancer with prolonged exposure. For the sake of your health, choose natural and organic beauty products that have minimal environmental impact and are derived from natural sources.

Synthetic Fragrance

Chemically-packed synthetic fragrance is a known skin irritant for some people, especially for those with sensitive skin. This may result in redness around your lips and dry flakes. If you delight in luxuriously scented lipsticks, pick naturally scented lipsticks such as those infused with the pleasant aroma of Vanilla Planifolia.

As your lips are delicate and susceptible to irritation and premature aging, keeping these toxic ingredients out of your lipsticks ensures that your lips get all the care they deserve.
